This salvaged wooden chair back, recovered from residential discards in the Bloordale neighborhood, embodies the ethos of adaptive reuse. The two decorative posts, originally framing the chair back, were meticulously salvaged and repurposed as the focal elements in this material exploration.

Found Material

Cut, Plane and sand Wood

PVC Plastic Molds

Add Resin to Material

The posts were cut in half, sliced along its facade and cast in resin. This process dove into the inner workings of the wood and revealed how its curvature when sliced has a sculptural impact that can be used in may new forms to create dramatic impacts within many types of spaces.

By casting the posts in a translucent resin, this material can be used for many applications such as tiling, flooring, wall features, etc... for this particular sample, the translucent resin allows the material to be used as a wall feature that, when applied with a light source, will create a subtle diffused light source in the space whilst highlighting its unique sculptural form.
